Notes: * The termini and final length for M-158 reflect the beginning and ending of the route and its length as of the time of the route's cancellation in c.1935.
New! 2025-10 In early 1934, the route of M-9 (later M-99) in southern Hillsdale Co consisted of: northerly on Pioneer Rd, west on Burt Rd, jogging at Goose Neck Bend, north on Clark Rd, west on Montgomery Rd through Frontier, then north on Hillsdale Rd into Hillsdale. In 1934, construction began on a state trunkline "loop" route designated M-158 running northerly from M-9 via Pioneer Rd from Burt Rd to Montgomery Rd, then westerly along Montgomery Rd back to M-9 at Frontier. The Montgomery Rd segment of this new trunkline route was intended to become a short spur route from M-9 at Pioneer Rd into the community of Frontier once M-9 itself was extended due northerly to M-34 near Osseo. However, this M-9 realignment was delayed, then ultimately cancelled in the fall of 1935, with M-158 being incorporated into the route of M-9 instead. Whether M-158 was ever signed in the field is not definitively known, but since it was shown on official highway maps issued to the public for two years, it may well have been. To date, this is the only time the M-158 designation has been used on the Michigan state highway system. (See Former M-158 Route Maps.)
History: 1930 (Dec 2) New! 2025-10 – The State Highway Dept takes the first step in a major realignment project for M-9 in central Hillsdale Co. Up to now, M-9 has followed the former route of M-64 from the Ohio state line northerly along Pioneer Rd to Burt Rd, then stair-steps into Frontier via Burt Rd (jogging to the north at Crampton Rd), Clark Rd and Montgomery Rd. West of Frontier, M-9 turns northerly via S Hillsdale Rd for 9½ miles into downtown Hillsdale where it meets M-34. A new alignment for M-9 is established along Pioneer Rd from Burt Rd northerly 2.0 miles to Tamarack Rd, then due northerly through the countryside via a yet-to-be-constructed highway for 6.0 more miles to a ⊤-intersection with the newly-established alignment for M-34 (assumed into the system on this same day) running between Pittsford and Hillsdale). M-9 would then turn left and follow the new M-34 alignment via a yet-to-be constructed highway into Hillsdale from the southeast. The 13.9 miles of existing M-9 route along Burt, Clark, Montgomery and S Hillsdale Rds is officially turned back to local control, however until the new alignment for M-9 is constructed it will continue to follow its existing route as a "marked-and-maintained" state highway.
As an aside, on the same day, the 2.2 miles of Montgomery Rd from the newly-established route of M-9 at Pioneer Rd westerly to the existing route of M-9 at Clark Rd at Frontier is also established as a new state trunkline highway route, to be designated as M-158 and function as a state highway spur serving the community of Frontier from the new through route of M-9, once that highway is constructed in the future. (See Former M-158 Route Maps for a cartographic portrayal.)
1933 New! 2025-10 – The proposed spur trunkline route into Frontier from M-9 likely receives its M-158 designation by late 1933, with other similar routes also given their route designations around this time as well.
1934 (Jan 21) New! 2025-10 – The only known reference to M-158 in contemporary news reports occurs in the Sunday, January 21, 1934 edition of the Battle Creek Enquirer in an annoucement of contracts awarded for road construction projects, including the "improvement of M-9 and M-158 in Hillsdale County..."
1934 (Spring/Summer) New! 2025-10 – After some delay, construction is completed on upgrading the existing county roads which will become the new routes for M-9 (Pioneer Rd between Burt and Montgomery Rds) and M-158 (Montgomery Rd between Pioneer and Clark Rds). The marked-and-maintained route of M-9 is removed from the Burt–Crampton–Burt–Clark Rds route and moved to its official route along Pioneer Rd between Burt Rd and M-158/Montgomery Rd, where it turns westerly along the newly completed M-158 back to its marked-and-maintained route along Montgomery and S Hillsdale Rds between Frontier and Hillsdale. While it's not clear if M-158 is signed along the 2.2 miles of Montgomery Rd from M-9/Pioneer Rd westerly to Clark Rd (concurrently with M-9), the route is shown on official State Highway Dept maps issued to the public for the rest of the year and through most of 1935, so it may well have been. (See Former M-158 Route Maps for a cartographic portrayal.)
1935 (Oct 22) New! 2025-10 – At the same time as many other long-proposed state trunkline highway projects and realignments around the state are permanently cancelled and "de-mapped," the due-northerly extension of M-9 along the Pioneer Rd axis from Montgomery Rd east of Frontier to the new alignment of M-34 near Osseo is officially abandoned and cancelled as a trunkline route (for now). Only the segment of M-9 along Pioneer Rd from Burt Rd to M-158/Montgomery Rd and M-158 from M-9/Pioneer Rd westerly to Clark Rd (existing marked-and-maintained M-9) are completed by this point. The portion of M-9 that had been officially cancelled and turned back to county control form Frontier to Hillsdale in late 1930 (and had been "marked-and-maintained" as part of M-9 since then) is re-established as a state trunkline route on this date. As the M-158 spur now becomes subsumed as part of the M-9 through route instead of a spur route from M-9 into Frontier, the M-158 designation is relegated to history. (See Former M-158 Route Maps for a cartographic portrayal.)
1936 (June 1) New! 2025-10 – The June 1, 1936 Official Michigan Highway Map published by the State Highway Dept is the first issue known to have the M-158 symbol removed from the route of M-9 east of Frontier, assumedly indicating any M-158 route markers which may have been posted along the short route had then been removed.
Controlled Access: New! 2025-10 No portion of former M-158 upon decommissioning existed as freeway or expressway, existing largely before modern-day control of access principles are practiced.
