Existing from 1926 until 1962, US-16 ran across the Lower Peninsula's midsection, connecting cities such as Grand Haven (later Muskegon), Grand Rapids, Lansing and Detroit. Today, I-96 runs along the general route followed by US-16 during its existence and the reason for its "decommissioning" in the 1960s. Ironically, in 1926, US-16 replaced the existing routing of M-16 which also ran from Grand Haven via Grand Rapids and Lansing to Detroit. Please see the Historic US-16 pages for more information on this historic U.S. Highway.
