What's New?

As the Michigan state trunkline system is constantly evolving and new (or "new" historical) information is discovered or passed along, new and updated information is added to this site. Below is a list of those changes, with the latest ones listed first.

This listing features completely expanded Notes and History sections. Added new information about a potential BUS US-12 route in downtown St Joseph from the 1950s to the Master List 1913–Present. Added a Waukonda-Klock Expressway, 1953 map to the Maps section. Also added links to it on the M-63 route listing and on the Klock Road Interchange animation page. April 5, 2024		Here's what's new or changed today: Added a "new style" route listing for M-148 and made the necessary changes to the Routes 140–159 page. This listing features a complete and expanded history section and an actual route map of M-148, too! Updated the October 29, 1932 historical item and added a new Mid-1933 historical item to the M-20 route listing (based on the new M-148 information added to the site.) Updated the quite large 1930-33 historical item on the US-31 route listing.
April 1, 2024		Unfortunately NOT an April Fool's Joke, the Capitol Loop through downtown Lansing was cancelled as a state trunkline route and turned back to municipal control on March 26 with related website updates including: Updated the Capitol Loop route listing to become the Former Capitol Loop route listing. Updated the applicable portions of the I-496 route listing. Updated the Master List 1913–Present as necessary. Related to the above, the route of M-143 also changes, necessitating updating the M-143 route listing. Updated the M-99 route listing to show its northern terminus no longer coincides with the western terminus of the new-former Capitol Loop. Also added a Will Carleton-related link to the Weblinks section.

March 3, 2024		Here's what's new or changed today:   Finished the update on the "New!" or "Updated" graphics, sitewide. (See "February 29, 2024" below.) Verified ALL links on the Related Links page, updating a few which had changed. Added a historic route map to the Former M-98 route listing. Added a historic route map to the Historic US-102 route listing. Added a historic route map to the Former M-111 route listing. Updated the notes section of the BUS US-2 (Ironwood) route listing. Updated the July 1–August 15, 1960 historical item on the BL I-94 (Albion) route listing. As noted below, many broken or changed weblinks have been corrected across the entire website.
February 29, 2024		Today's website updates include:   Finally implemented a way to truly only mark those items on the site which are "New!" or "Updated" using the respective graphics. From now on, all items marked as "New!" or "Updated" will be those added or changed at some point in the past year. Older "New!" and "Updated" graphics have been removed from many pages on the site with the remainder being removed in the coming days. The process of removing all old "New!" and "Updated" graphics (see above) is resulting in the correction and updating of many weblinks throughout the site, both to external website as well as other pages in this site. Completely overhauled the history section of the M-27 route listing (and other additions and improvements), adding copious amounts of "new" historical information on that route, including tons of new info going back to 1913! (Copious amounts... as in four times the amount of information!) Finally fixed the image comparison slider function on the M-95: Republic Mine Reroute (1958) map page! Added a historic route map to the Former M-101 route listing. Added a historic route map to the Former M-107 route listing. Added a historic route map to the Former M-108 route listing. February 14, 2024		Today's website updates include: Updated the mileages on the National Highway System page to the latest available numbers and fixed some external weblinks. Added a new April-May 1983 historical item to the M-32 route listing. Since so many updates were being made to it... Completely overhauled the history section of the M-32 route listing, adding copious amounts of "new" historical information on that route, including tons of new info going back to 1913! (Copious amounts... as in nearly four times the amount of information!) Added a new April 22, 1963 historical item and updated the 1983 historical item on the M-68 route listing regarding the 1963–1983 extension of the route along US-31 to Petoskey. Added a note to the Notes section and a July 30, 1975 historical item to the I-96 route listing regarding a theory (one of hundreds) that Jimmy Hoffa was buried somewhere under that freeway.

February 12, 2024		What's updated on the website: Added some new state trunkline route designations to the Master List 1913–Present: CONN M-59 – the segment of trunkline along Hall Rd/Wm P Rosso Hwy in Macomb Co between Gratiot Ave and I-94 from c.1968 to c.1998 (now part of mainline M-59) CONN I-94 – the former route of M-29 along Snover Rd in Harrison and Chesterfield Twps, Macomb Co, from 1971 to c.1998 (now obliterated) TO I-196 – connected completed segments of I-196 in Allegan and Ottawa Cos. Ran along US-31 and M-21 from 1967 to 1974. Added a new note regarding the potential M-14 freeway through the City of Detroit from the late-1960s and early-1970s to the M-14 route listing. Updated the note on a long-proposed realignment of M-32 and added a new 1967-68 historical item and updated the November 16, 1973 historical item on the M-32 route listing, including a corridor map showing plans for modernizing and realigning M-32 in Otsego and Montmorency Cos. January 12, 2022		Here's what's updated on the website: Completed adding the years to the "Extant" column in the Master List 1913–Present—a process which began when that column was added when the list was transitioned to the new website design in 2013(!). Every route designation now has the years it existed(s) shown, if known. It was a huge undertaking... Updated the extant dates and the description of Baraga's Former BUS US-41 on the Master List 1913–Present. Added Former BS I-69 in Port Huron to the Master List 1913–Present as it had been overlooked. (It only existed for a short period before it was redesignated as BL I-69.) Also added the proposed-but-never-used I-73 designation to the Master List 1913–Present as well. (I-73 will likely receive its own listing or feature article on the site in the future.) Completely overhauled the history section of the M-38 route listing, adding copious amounts of "new" historical information on that route, including tons of new info going back to 1913! October 30, 2020		Decided to add the original-but-eventually-never-used Interstate route designations from AASHO's "Official Route Numbering for the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways" map adopted on August 14, 1957 to the Master List 1913–Present. These never implemented designations included: I-67 (never built), I-77 (became part of I-94), I-92 (became part of I-94), and I-94N (became I-196, now I-96).
October 28, 2020		Added a newly "discovered" historic iteration of the M-144 route designation that was assigned but never actually constructed or posted in the field to the Master List 1913–Present.
October 25, 2020		A listing of what is new or changed on the site today: Added a section containing what could be referred to as "named-designation" routes to the Master List 1913–Present for some routes which didn't have or do not have a route number. These may not be 100% "official" and may be updated over time if more "official" information can be located. For now, they include: BELLE ISLE ROADS – A catch-all listing for the entire network of roads on Belle Isle which were jurisdictionally transferred from the City of Detroit to the State of Michigan in 2014 when the State took over Belle Isle Park as a State Park. These roads are officially classified as Unsigned State Trunklines at present and are included on that page. CAPITOL LOOP – A duplicate listing. It's long been listed under I-496 CL which has seemed to be a secret internal designation used on some internal MDOT maps to denote the Capitol Loop, as if it were a business loop off I-496, which it essentially is. NORTHWESTERN HWY – Before it was designated as BS I-696, M-4, US-10 or M-4, all or portions of Northwestern Hwy did not bear a state trunkline highway designation, so it's listed here and, in the future, a route listing page will be created for it as well. WIARD RD – For less than a year after the US-12 designation was removed from Wiard Rd at Willow Run, this roadway bore no route designation and while nowadays it may been referred to by MDOT as "OLD US-12" until it was jurisdictionally transferred, it seems that during its time as an unsigned trunkline, it was referred to as just Wiard Rd. Made many other updates to the Master List 1913–Present, especially to former routes, including the years the route existed. Updated the links to the MDOT-created brochures for the M-6/South Beltline project and added a link to the commemorative brochure to the November 2004 historical item on the M-6 route listing and also updated some of the weblinks at the bottom of the page Updated the February 1985 historical item on the M-183 route listing.

Added new August 1965 and September 1981 historical items to the US-223 route listing. Added links for US-24A leading to the CONN US-24 (Erie) route listing as the former is a direct predecessor to the latter.
September 4, 2017		A pair of updates for the site: Updated the US-2 route listing with new and additional information on non-freeway milemarking along the route. Added information on the new non-freeway milemarking to the M-28 route listing.
August 30, 2017		Several updates on the site related to a spate of jurisdictional transfers in Grand Rapids: Updated the BUS US-131 (Grand Rapids) and US-131 route listings to reflect the former's complete decommissioning and tranfer to city control. Updated the BS I-196 (Grand Rapids) [now re-titled as BS I-196 (Wyoming)] and I-196 route listings to reflect the former's truncation and transfer of the portion in the City of Grand Rapids to city jurisdiction. Updated the M-45 route listing to reflect the jurisdictional transfer of the entirety of OLD M-45/Fulton St in Grand Rapids to city control. Removed the OLD M-45 route listing and modified the OLD BUS US-131 route listing on the Unsigned Trunklines page. Updated the Master List with the above changes. Unrelated to the Grand Rapids jurisdictional transfers, the Former BS I-96 (Portland) route listing receives a minor update as well.
August 8, 2017		Updates on the site for today include: Added additional information to the Historic US-27 narrative on that route's extension over the Mackinac Bridge for a few years in the late 1950s and a proposal to continue the route all the way to Sault Ste Marie. Also added information on this proposal to the US-27 year-by-year history as well. Added the same information as noted above to the US-2 route listing. Also added some additional information regarding milemarkers on US-2 as well. Added to the Master List a newly discovered planned-but-never-implemented BUS US-2 designation to be co-signed along BL I-75 through St Ignace from 1958.
July 28, 2017		Here are today's site updates: Updated the M-22 route listing and the Leelanau Scenic Heritage Route listing on the Scenic Byways & Heritage Routes page to show the new Michigan Byways markers have been erected on the route as well as its apparent extension south of Empire. Updated the M-109 route listing to show the Leelanau Scenic Heritage Route is now a Pure Michigan Byway. Also corrected the Circle Tour information in the route listing to properly indicate it is a Lake Michigan Circle Tour LOOP route and not the mainline LMCT route in the area.

March 25, 2017		A trio of updates today: Updated the October 1994 and August 1999 historical items on the M-5 route listing. Updated the Master List with additional information about two proposed uses for the M-9 designation in the 1980s and 90s. Corrected the "State Trunkline Needs, 1960–1980" item in the US-45 route listing. A site visitor pointed out that section was a duplicate of the one from the M-44 route listing. (Oops!) February 26, 2017		Here are today's site updates: To reflect the documentation of the second interation of M-13 along present-day M-136 from 1931–1934, new April 1927 and February 1931 historical items are added to the M-13 route listing and the April 1927 and August 1931 items are updated. Additionally, the March 1933 and Janiaru 1935 historical items are updated and expanded on the M-13 route listing. In part due to the updates above, the February 1931 and June 1962 historical items on the M-136 route listing are updated and expanded.

February 6, 2017		Updated today: After much delay, the long-neglected US-12A routing in downtown Saint Joseph from the 1930s has finally been added to the Master List. More information on this route will be added to the site in the future, but at least now it's documented on the Master List! Many thanks to Marc F. for his repeated and insistent badgering... Added a new January 1963 historical item to the Historic US-27 route listing.
February 4, 2017		Here's some more stuff that's changed or been added: Found yet another former "undiscovered" state trunkline from yesteryear! This time an earlier iteration of M-160 than previously known (1929–1935) at Springport, but never actually signed in the field. Updated the Master List with this new M-160 routing. As of this June, the Michigan Highways website will have been online 20 full years! To celebrate this achievement, I've added some new graphics to the site header image highlighting this fact. Updated the May–July 1960 historical item on the M-55 route listing.

May 23–24, 2016		After months of research, an entirely overhauled and expanded I-94 route listing debuts. A complete historical timeline of ALL routes which eventually became part of I-94 has been incorporated. Also updated: Added additional historical information to the 1922 historical item in the M-15 route listing Added a 1934 historical item to the FH-13 route listing.
May 22, 2016		Today's updates and changes to the website: Updated and added several new historical items to the US-12 route listing based on similar updates and additions being prepared for an overhauled I-94 route listing. Updated the M-5 route listing to indicate the apparent extension of the signed route of M-5 along Grand River Ave into downtown Detroit. Updated the 1973 and 1974 historical items in the M-25 route listing. Updated the 1947 and 1949 historical items in the M-29 route listing.

November 17, 2015		Some new historical information added today: Made updates to the history in the BUS US-2 (Ironwood) route listing giving a precise date when this route was designated along what had been M-54 through the city. Also updated the M-54 route listing with the same information. Added some additional historical information to the US-31 route listing and M-140 route listing regarding the completion and opening of the South Haven bypass in 1942. Enhanced the FH-13 (Hiawatha NF) route listing with complete historical details, weblinks and other information.
November 16, 2015		A pair of updates for today: Added an interesting historical note to the M-28 route listing Notes section on a proposal to realign M-28 between Newberry and Munising, along with an accompanying map showing the proposal. Added a heretofore unknown M-148 route designation to the Master List—to have served as an access route into Muskegon State Park via North Muskegon, but was likely never signed in the field.
November 13, 2015		A pair of updates for today: Updated the Master List with an earlier incarnation of M-169 than had been previously known. This route was initially designated as "M-36 STUB," although it was highly unlikely it was ever signed as such in the field. Both the M-36 STUB and its eventual replacement, the newly-discovered first iteration of M-169, have been added to the list. Added a "new style" route listing for M-90 and made the necessary changes to the Routes 90–99 page. This listing also features a completely overhauled and updated history section!
November 12, 2015		Added "new style" route listings for M-89 and M-134 and made the necessary changes to the Routes 80–89 and Routes 120–139 pages. These listings also feature completely overhauled and updated history sections!
November 3–8, 2015		Added "new style" route listings for M-84, M-85, M-86, Former M-87, and M-88 and made the necessary changes to the Routes 80–89 page. October 28, 2013		Added "new" historical information regarding the history of the state route marker to the Michigan's Route Markers page. Also added a "new style" route listing US-23 (including adding some "new" historical information regarding State Highway Dept plans for the route of US-23 during the 1960–1980 timeframe) and made the necessary changes to the Routes 20–29 page. Additionally, revised the article "The Tug-of-War That Was the US-23 Freeway" to use the past tense to more accurately protray it in a historical light, as the project has been officially cancelled for over a decade.

October 26, 2013		Overhauled the National Highway System (NHS) page in the In Depth section to include the major changes to the system implemented under the MAP-21 transportation funding legistlation enacted in 2012. Also added a "new style" route listing for M-20 and made the necessary changes to the Routes 20–29 page.
October 25, 2013		Added a "new style" route listing for M-19 and made the necessary changes to the Routes 10–19 page. Also overhauled the National Highway System (NHS) information for each route from 1 through 19, including: M-1, M-3, US-10, US-12, M-13, M-15, M-17 , and M-19. As route listings are migrated to the "new style," the NHS information (among all of the other sections) will be revised with the new additions to the NHS under MAP-21.

Also corrected a slight error and added a new historical note on the M-5 route listing. And based on several e-mails from site visitors (thanks Erik, Nathan and Rob!), I was able to update the M-143 route listing, the Master List and Unsigned Routes pages with the fact that M-143 is, once again, signed in the field!
July 1, 2013		Added the M-5 "new style" route listing to the site and made the necessary changes to the Routes 1–9 Listings page.
May 22, 2013 BIG NEWS		Added the first three "new style" route listings pages to the site. Since 1997, the Route Listings have consisted of multiple routes (sometimes more than a dozen) per listings page. For example, the Routes 120–139 page not only contains complete details on 13 different routes, but included listings for US-127 and US-131, each of which were quite lengthy in their own rights! With more information being added to many of the listings, including "new" historical data, there seem to no longer be any benefit to breaking down the listings into "ranges" as has been done for the past 16 years. As such, I have begun the long process of separating each listing out into its own page. The first three "new style" route listings to be added to the site are: M-1, US-2, and M-3. At present I am planning on also including separate pages for each former state trunkline highway route as well (e.g. Former M-4). Doing so should allow me to pare down the information on the Master List page a bit, too. Also made a few updates to the US-31 Freeway in Berrien County article (including adding sub-headings to break up the article a bit) and added the Controlled-Access Highways article to the In Depth section page.
May 21, 2013		In preparation for the "new style" route listings (one route per page), I've added the Controlled-Access Highways page to the In Depth section to help define and differentiate Freeways and Expressways (e.g. Controlled-Access highways and Limited-Access highways).
April 20, 2013		Finally brought the homepage over to the new site style including three new illustrative photos. (The old homepage images had been on there for almost a decade!) Also moved the blurb about being featured in Michigan History magazine to the About This Site page.
March 22– March 29, 2013		The majority of the website redesign/refresh work in this timeframe has been on pages in the Other Routes section, some of which have received substantial updates and improvements: Forest Highways - the former Forest Highways page was split into an overview/history page and a route listings page with much new content added. The route listings were completely updated with several new Forest Highway Designations. Great Lakes Circle Tours - the main page and pages for the Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior Circle Tours have all been updated. Polar-Equator Trail - the page for this now-fading route has been updated as well. Heritage Routes (Michigan's Byways) - what had been one Heritage Routes page has been split into four pages: Heritage Routes overview - an introduction to the Heritage Routes program, soon to be retitled the Michigan's Byways program. Historic Heritage Routes - a listing of each of the Historic Heritage Routes Recreational Heritage Routes - a listing of each Recreational Heritage Route Scenic Heritage Routes - a listing of each of the Secnic Heritage Routes
March 15– March 21, 2013		Quite a bit more of the site has been converted over to the new design. As each page is converted, all external links are being checked and verified and in many instances new content is being added to either bring the information up-to-date or to augment what's already there. Examples of updated or expanded pages and articles include: Related LInks - All links checked, dead links removed, and several new links added. County Routes & Listings - New "index page" for all things county route-related in Michigan. Intercounty Highways - Moved to a new URL. Added the Downtown Adrian: Trunkline Routing History map to show ALL of the trunkline routes and the dates of their existence through the City of Adrian from 1915 to present. (Added a link to the map to each affected route listing and to the general Maps page.) Updated the BL I-196 (Holland/Zeeland) listing to reflect it being continuous again.
December 3, 2012		Three more updates: Added information on a segment of I-75 winning the "Parade Magazine Scenic Highway Award" for 1964, selected as the year's finest example of a "driver's road" for scenery, speed and safety from across the country. The mileages were calculated using State of Michigan data to one-thousandth of a mile, then rounded to the nearest one-hundredth of a mile as per the existing conventions on this site.
