What's New?

As the Michigan state trunkline system is constantly evolving and new (or "new" historical) information is discovered or passed along, new and updated information is added to this site. Below is a list of nearly all of those changes, with the latest ones listed first.

May 22, 2013 BIG NEWS		Added the first three "new style" route listings pages to the site. Since 1997, the Route Listings have consisted of multiple routes (sometimes more than a dozen) per listings page. For example, the Routes 120—139 page not only contains complete details on 13 different routes, but included listings for US-127 and US-131, each of which were quite lengthy in their own rights! With more information being added to many of the listings, including "new" historical data, there seem to no longer be any benefit to breaking down the listings into "ranges" as has been done for the past 16 years. As such, I have begun the long process of separating each listing out into its own page. The first three "new style" route listings to be added to the site are: M-1, US-2, and M-3. At present I am planning on also including separate pages for each former state trunkline highway route as well (e.g. Former M-4). Doing so should allow me to pare down the information on the Master List page a bit, too. Also made a few updates to the US-31 Freeway in Berrien County article (including adding sub-headings to break up the article a bit) and added the Controlled-Access Highways article to the In Depth section page.
May 21, 2013		In preparation for the "new style" route listings (one route per page), I've added the Controlled-Access Highways page to the In Depth section to help define and differentiate Freeways and Expressways (e.g. Controlled-Access highways and Limited-Access highways).
April 20, 2013		Finally brought the homepage over to the new site style including three new illustrative photos. (The old homepage images had been on there for almost a decade!) Also moved the blurb about being featured in Michigan History magazine to the About This Site page.
March 22– March 29, 2013		The majority of the website redesign/refresh work in this timeframe has been on pages in the Other Routes section, some of which have received substantial updates and improvements: Forest Highways - the former Forest Highways page was split into an overview/history page and a route listings page with much new content added. The route listings were completely updated with several new Forest Highway Designations. Great Lakes Circle Tours - the main page and pages for the Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior Circle Tours have all been updated. Polar-Equator Trail - the page for this now-fading route has been updated as well. Heritage Routes (Michigan's Byways) - what had been one Heritage Routes page has been split into four pages: Heritage Routes overview - an introduction to the Heritage Routes program, soon to be retitled the Michigan's Byways program. Historic Heritage Routes - a listing of each of the Historic Heritage Routes Recreational Heritage Routes - a listing of each Recreational Heritage Route Scenic Heritage Routes - a listing of each of the Secnic Heritage Routes
March 15– March 21, 2013		Quite a bit more of the site has been converted over to the new design. As each page is converted, all external links are being checked and verified and in many instances new content is being added to either bring the information up-to-date or to augment what's already there. Examples of updated or expanded pages and articles include: Related LInks - All links checked, dead links removed, and several new links added. County Routes & Listings - New "index page" for all things county route-related in Michigan. Intercounty Highways - Moved to a new URL. County Routes - No content yet, but this will become an informational catch-all on the various county route systems other than the Intercounty Highway System (which has been covered on this site for many years).
March 14, 2013		Finished adding all of the current, former, and unsigned Intercounty Highway routes to the Master List: 1918–Present. Still a lot more work to go on the list, though...
March 11– March 13, 2013		Changed over more of the site to the new design. Most of the pages under the first drop-down navigation menu ("Michigan's Highways") have been converted over, including: Introduction Michigan's Route Systems - formerly "Michigan's Trunklines," now slightly refocused Michigan's Route Markers Master List: 1918–Present - now expanded to include Intercounty Highway designations and started adding the years each designation was extant. February 28– March 11, 2013		Applied the new site design to more of the website. Instead of listing the individual pages here (that list is getting quite long), suffice it to say that many of the pages have been converted. This includes everything under the In Depth: News & Articles and About This Site headings and additional pages elsewhere. February 28, 2013		Started debuting a new overall design and style for the Michigan Highways website. February 23, 2013		Updated additional notes in the US-10 and M-10 route listings. Also cleaned up and added new external links on the Highways 10-19 page.
February 21, 2013		Updated a note in the US-10 route listing. Also cleaned up and added new external links on most of the route listings on the Highways 1-9 page.
February 14, 2013		Updated and added new historical information to the I-69 route listing.
January 17, 2013		Took care of a little external link clean-up in the M-1, US-2 (West) and US-2 (East) listings.
January 14, 2013		Added the Diagonal Highways, 1935-36 article to the In Depth section and a larger version of the Diagonal Highways Map, 1936 to the Maps section.
January 13, 2013		Five updates or additions: Added a new Capitol Loop Route Map showing the route and termini of the Capitol Loop in downtown Lansing as well as other information. Updated the Capitol Loop route listing to include links to the new map. Overhauled the Downtown Detroit Trunklines map with minor updates. Updated the Maps page with the new and updated maps. Added a new historical photo of the US-2 interchange at the northern end of the Mackinac Bridge approach roadway (now part of I-75) to the Mackinac Straits Historical Photos page. Uploaded the first new background image for the sitewide header graphic since 2008. (This is a portion of the new historical photo added to the Mackinac Straits Historical Photos page, noted above.)
December 23, 2012		Added notes to the BUS US-223 and Capitol Loop route listings.
December 20, 2012		Updated all of the individual listings on the Heritage Routes page, and added new ones that were missing.
December 11, 2012		Here's some more good stuff: Updates (some of them pretty massive!) to the following listings to incorporate some in-depth research into the many trunkline routings in the City of Adrian over the years: M-34 route listing M-52 route listing M-80 route listing US-223 route listing BUS US-223 route listing including the jurisdictional transfers of 2010 I also updated the rest of the M-80 route listing while I was at it. Added the Downtown Adrian: Trunkline Routing History map to show ALL of the trunkline routes and the dates of their existence through the City of Adrian from 1915 to present. (Added a link to the map to each affected route listing and to the general Maps page.) Updated the BL I-196 (Holland/Zeeland) listing to reflect it being continuous again.
December 3, 2012		Three more updates: Added information on a segment of I-75 winning the "Parade Magazine Scenic Highway Award" for 1964, selected as the year's finest example of a "driver's road" for scenery, speed and safety from across the country. Updated the M-152 route listing with additional information about its longtime status as a turnback candidate. Made a minor update to the FUTURE M-231 listing.
December 2, 2012		Updated the US-131 route listing for 1956 and 1968 to reflect new historical information on the former four-lane divided segment north of Mancelona. Also updated the Michigan Official Maps: Christopher Bessert Collection listing.
November 30, 2012		Updated the M-168 listing to reflect its decommissioning and transfer to local control in April and amended the Master List accordningly.
November 22– November 25, 2012		FINALLY made some long-awaited updates to a few of the route listings on the site, including: M-30 extension in Midland County Updated the Lake Michigan Circle Tour information in the US-31 route listing. M-139 extension in Berrien County (and related updates to the US-31 and M-140 listings) Updated the M-311 listing to reflect its signed status. BUS US-12 decommissioning at Niles (and related updates to the US-12 and M-51 listings) CONN M-13 to reflect its new "internal" connector designation. CONN US-24 (Erie) to reflect its new "internal" connector designations. CONN US-24 (Woodhaven) to reflect its new "internal" connector designation. Capitol Loop to reflect its new "internal" connector designation. Removed the OLD US-23BR (Fenton) listing from the Unsigned Trunklines page. (It was turned back to local control.) Removed the OLD US-31 (Berrien) listing from the Unsigned Trunklines page. (It became part of the M-139 extension.) Updated the Master List to reflect the changes from above. Completely updated the Unsigned Connectors list on the Unsigned Trunklines page to reflect an overhaul in the "internal" connector designations. Also added a Niles Area Highways: 2010– map showing an overview of the highways in the Niles area.
November 19, 2012		Updated, corrected and augmented the information on the Great Lakes Circle Tours, Lake Michigan Circle Tour, and Lake Superior Circle Tour pages.
January 2, 2012		Corrected the "contact" e-mail address on the Corrections & Feedback page. Also added the "As featured in the 'Webwatcher' column of the January/February 2012 Michigan History magazine" blurb on the homepage.
December 6, 2011		Fixed an unfortunate gaffe with the domain name... it works again! Also updated the "contact" e-mail address in the footer at the bottom of each page. Minor modifications of the homepage text to reflect that the "recent" website redesign was actually several years ago.
November 21, 2008		Uploaded a new background image for the sitewide header graphic.
September 28, 2008		Updated the route length figures for ALL of the Intercounty (County-Desingated) Highways on all three listing pages: A-2 – C-81, D-19 – H-15, and H-16 – H-63. The mileages were calculated using State of Michigan data to one-thousandth of a mile, then rounded to the nearest one-hundredth of a mile as per the existing conventions on this site.
June 24, 2008		Updated the M-107 Route Listing to reflect its transfer to local control on June 4, as well as updating the Master List to show the change.
May 30, 2008		Added a page to the Photos section featuring new non-freeway Clearview trunkline signage in St Joseph Co.
May 5, 2008		Made several minor updates to the M-21 route listing.
April 9, 2008		Made some minor changes to the County Highways page, added some information to several listings on the County Highways A-2 - C-81 page, and some minor modifications to the county route marker descriptions on the Route Markers page.
January 1, 2008		Happy New Year! Made a few sitewide changes for the New Year, including updating the copyright in the footer at the bottom of every page.
December 17, 2007		Verified all of the links on the Related Links page. Corrected broken or misdirected links as necessary.
December 15, 2007		Updated the M-121 route listing to change it's status from "former" to "current" with the redesignation of OLD M-21 between Zeeland and Grandville as M-121. Also updated references to the new M-121 on the M-21 route listing, the US-31: Ottawa County page and the Master List section. Removed OLD M-21 (Ottawa) from the Unsigned Trunklines page.
November 3, 2007		Updated the route listings for M-38 and M-64 to reflect the jurisdictional transfer of former trunkline segments related to the new Ontonagon River Bridge. Removed OLD M-38 and OLD M-64 from the Unsigned Trunklines page.
November 2, 2007		Updated the BS I-96 (Portland), I-96 and Master List 1918-Present pages to reflect the decommissioning and jurisdictional transfer of Portland's BS I-96 to local control.
July 8, 2007		Updated the BUS US-31 (Muskegon) route listing in response to the jurisdictional transfer in downtown Muskegon as well as the M-46 route listing because of the changes to its western terminus. Also updated the M-42 route listing with more changes resulting from its truncation to Manton in June.
June 15, 2007		Added the M-37 Scenic Heritage Route to the Heritage Routes page and also updated the M-37 route listing.
June 14, 2007		Updated the information in the M-42 route listing regarding the jurisdictional transfer of the Manton-to-Mesick segment. Also added a new OLD M-42 listing to the unsigned trunklines page.
May 28, 2007		Added additional information to the M-42 route listing about the pending jurisdictional transfer of the Manton-to-Mesick segment. Also updated the BUS US-131 (Grand Rapids) listing and made a minor correction to the OLD US-131 BR listing on the unsigned trunklines page.
May 27, 2007		Updated the M-42 route listing to reflect the pending jurisdictional transfer of the part of that route from Manton westerly to Mesick.
March 15, 2007		Updated the Unsigned Trunklines page to include the new OLD M-38 and OLD M-64 listings. Also augmented the County-Designated (Intercounty) Highways page with several photographs.
February 26, 2007		Updated the OLD I-69 (OLD M-78) route listing to reflect its truncation to Perry.
February 6, 2007		Corrected a slight error in the Unsigned Connectors section of the Unsigned Trunklines page. (Thanks, Tim!) Also added new information to the OLD I-69 (OLD M-78) unsigned trunkline route listing.
January 8, 2007		Added two links to an article in Michigan Historymagazine about the dedication of the Gerald R Ford Freeway to the I-196 route listing.

December 14, 2006		Updated the information related to the 2004 Holland business route jurisdictional transfer on the following pages: Holland Business Routes: The Turnback and BL I-196 (Holland-Zeeland). Also updated the route listings for M-38, US-45 and M-64 to reflect the opening of the new Ontonagon River Bridge as well as updating the Ontonagon State Trunkline Changes 2006 map.
November 25, 2006		Updated the US-31 route listing, US-31 in Ottawa County article and Master List 1918-Present page with information on the proposed M-231, as well as created a new Future M-231 route listing.
November 2, 2006		Updated the M-36 route listing and the Historic US-27 (Page 2) listing with new historical information.
October 22, 2006		Made a few minor modifications to the Michigan Left page, corrected an incorrect link to the County Highways D-19—H-15 listings page on most of the other route listings pages, and completely overhauled the design of the Heritage Routes page. October 6, 2006		Even more updates today: Updated the M-38 and M-64 route listings with additional information about the new Ontonagon River bridge in Ontonagon. Migrated the Highway Listings 60-69 and Highway Listings 70-79 pages to the "new" page format introduced in October 2005. October 5, 2006		Several more updates today: Updated the M-50 route listing to reflect a jurisdictional transfer and relocation of its eastern terminus in Monroe. Updated the M-26 route listing to reflect the completion of the realignment between South Range and Trimountain and the jurisdictional transfer of the former route through South Range. Also includes an updated version of the South Range Area map. Altered the BUS US-23 (Fenton) route listing to reflect its impeding decommissioning and transfer to local control. Also modified the US-23 route listing as well. Migrated the Highway Listings 40-49 and Highway Listings 50-59 pages to the "new" page format introduced in October 2005. In the process, various external links were verified and corrected, if necessary.
October 4, 2006		Several updates today: Updated the Heritage Routes page, adding new links, fixing broken ones and calculating mileages. Added information to the US-41 route listing regarding the Scenic Heritage Route and National Scenic Byway designations. Migrated the Highway Listings 30-39 page to the "new" page format introduced in October 2005. In the process, various external links were verified and corrected, if necessary.
September 25, 2006		Minor update to the History section of the M-116 route listing.
September 24, 2006		Major addition to the site: a comprehensive article "The History of Roads in Michigan" by Dorothy Pohl & Norman Brown. Minor update to the Historical Overview page and added a new Photos page.
September 17, 2006		Added the M-26 at South Range photo pages with 22 pictures of the existing route of M-26 being superceeded by a new alignment in 2006.
September 12, 2006		Added the US-2 Is NOT A Freeway photo page with three pictures of new signs along US-2 WEST in St Ignace.
August 23, 2006		Updated two links, one each in the M-10 and US-12 route listings. Also added new information to the M-53 route listing.
August 5, 2006		Heavily-updated the H-58 route listing with new information. Updated the BUS US-23 (Fenton) listing as well. Also migrated the Highways 10-19 and Highways 20-29 pages to the new design style.

January 12, 2006		Updated the US-41 route listing to reflect the completion of the Interstate Bridge project linking Menominee and Marinette, Wisc. Also made a few other corrections/updates to the US-41 and M-40 route listings.
January 7, 2006		Overhauled the Forest Highways page, converting it to the "new" Michgigan Highways website style from October 2005. Also converted the Highways 1-9 route listings page to the new style as well.
January 2, 2006		Happy New Year! Made a few sitewide changes for the New Year, including updating the copyright in the footer at the bottom of every page.
December 30, 2005		Updated the link to Eric Buchanan's Michigan Highways Photos website on the Related Links page.
December 9, 2005		Several changes/updated/additions today: Updated the Historic US-33 and US-31 route listings with new historic information. Added information regarding the impending decommissioning of Niles' BUS US-31 and the potential extension of M-139 into Niles to the US-31, BUS US-31, M-139 and M-140 route listings. Updated the precise southern terminus of M-25 in Port Huron after consultation with MDOT. Added new information to the M-84 history section and added the new OLD M-84 route to the Unsigned Trunklines page. Updated the Michigan State Trunkline Record Holders (PDF) document to include the new OLD M-84 route. Updated the Unsigned Connectors list with additional information on Connector 5 and Connector 13.
November 27, 2005		Completely overhauled and extensively revised the Unsigned Trunklines & Connectors page. Also corrected links in the M-1 route listing.
November 21, 2005		Made several changes and updates to the M-154 route listing.
November 19, 2005		Completely overhauled and updated the history section for the M-99 route listing as well as making several updates to the M-106 route listing.
November 17, 2005		Updated the M-168 listing to reflect its impending transfer to the Village of Elberta in 2010. Also updated the homepage and added a link and graphic for the MSP Winter Road Conditions website.
November 10, 2005		Added a brand-new map of Downtown Detroit Trunklines to the Maps section as well as linked from the M-1, M-3, M-10, US-12, M-85, I-375 and BS I-375 listings.
November 9, 2005		Added new entries to the history sections of the M-43 and US-131 route listings. Also added a one new link and updated the URL on another on the Links page; made a minor update to the M-185 route listing; corrected/updated information on the BUS US-131 (Manton) listing.
October 30, 2005		Uploaded Michigan State Trunkline Record Holders (PDF) and added a link to it on the Michigan's State Trunkline System page.
October 29, 2005		Added a map showing the County-Designated Highway Zone System to the County Highways page.
October 15– October 26, 2005		Updated the overall design of the entire website, including a new title graphic featuring the Mackinac Bridge, an updated set of navigation menus on the left side of most pages and some tweaks to the style sheets. October 14, 2005		Made a few corrections to the M-99 listing and the M-174 description on the Master List: 1918-Present. (Thanks Richard!) Also uploaded a new design for the homepage.
October 11, 2005		As a result of the several jurisdictional transfers in Marquette yesterday, the following route listings have been updated: M-553, M-554 and BUS US-41. Also updated with these changes is the Master List: 1918-Present.
October 4, 2005		Added information about a proposed trunkline extension to the M-32 and C-48 listings.
September 17, 2005		Added new or updated existing listings in the Master List 1918-Present page, including M-130 EXTENSION (new), M-170 (new), M-172 (new), M-173 (updated), and M-218 (updated). Also added some new historical information to the M-117 listing and added a new OLD US-127 listing to the Unsigned Trunklines page.
September 12, 2005		Added a new link to Eric Buchanan's Michigan Highways Photos website and updated another link on the Related Links page. Also added a new photograph to Page 2 of the Michigan Left pages and additional text on the primary Michigan Left page.
August 23, 2005		Added a link to Nathan Holth's Historic Bridges of Michigan and Elsewhere site to the Related Links page. Also made several minor corrections to the Master List: 1918-Present page.
August 21, 2005		Completely overhauled the History section in the US-31 route listing, literally quadrupling the amount of information presented.
August 16, 2005		Added two new articles to the In-Depth section (also linked from the US-31 listing): US-31 Freeway in Berrien Co US-31 Freeway in Ottawa Co Also added a brand-new H-11 listing to the D-19 - H-15 page and also updated the H-13 and H-58 listings. (Thanks Robert!)
August 11, 2005		Updated the History section of the M-1 listing with a jurisdictional transfer date. (Thanks Patrick!)
July 20, 2005		Uploaded a brand-new page, M-26: Eagle River Timber Bridge (1991), to the In Depth section.
July 19, 2005		Added links to Kevin Musser's "Three Spans over the Portage" article about the Houghton-Hancock Lift Bridge to the M-26 listing, US-41 listing and the Related Links page (Michigan's Bridges & Ferries section).
July 18, 2005		Added some new/updated information to the history portion of the M-78 route listings.
July 16, 2005		Made the following changes: Updated the M-18 listing with new modern-day and new historical information. Updated the BUS US-127 (Alma) listing with new information regarding the removal of the one-way couplet in downtown Alma. Revised the text of and added a link to a photo on the Michigan's Route Markers: The Clearview Future? page.
July 14, 2005		Minor corrections made to the M-311 listing. (Thanks A.J.!)
July 3, 2005		Revamped and revised Historic Auto Trails: Page 2, including adding representations of the auto trails markers and pole markings.
June 18, 2005		Added a link to the Route Markers page leading to the Michigan's Changing Route Marker Styles page at Barry Camp's website.
June 12, 2005		Completed the following: Made several more minor updates/corrections to the following route listings: US-23, M-24, M-25, CONN US-24 (Taylor), BL I-75 (Pontiac), BS I-75 (Bay City), BL I-75 (Gaylord), and BL I-94 (Battle Creek). (Thanks, Eric!) Also, based on new information, updated the M-5 listing and re-added OLD BS I-96 to the Unsigned Trunklines page. Based on recent jurisdictional transfers, updating the M-1 listing (2004 transfer) and the M-37 listing (May 2005 transfer). In addition, updated the route lengths for M-5, M-6, M-8, M-37, I-675 and I-696.
June 11, 2005		Fixed a few typos in the C-58 route listing. (Thanks, Robert!) Also made minor updates/corrections to the M-17 and BUS US-23 (Ann Arbor) listings. (Thanks, Eric!)
June 9, 2005		Updated the US-12 listing to reflect the jurisdictional transfer of a portion of the route in Detroit on June 8th. May 6, 2005		Updated the M-37 listing to reflect the jurisdictional transfer of a portion of the route in Battle Creek two days prior.
May 4, 2005		With the debut of a brand-new BUS US-31 route at Ludington, the following listings were revised: BUS US-31 (Ludington), US-31 listing, and OLD US-31 listing.
April 30, 2005		Added information to the M-37 listing regarding a pending jurisdictional transfer in Battle Creek and also added a link to the M-37: Hastings-Battle Creek page to the same listing.
April 23, 2005		• Added Michigan's Route Markers: The Clearview Future? to illustrate what the state's route markers may look like in the future; • Added information about the Lodge Frwy's new exit numbers to the M-10 listing; • Added information regarding the impending jurisdictional transfers impacting US-41, BUS US-41, M-553 and M-554 in the City of Marquette to those respective listings. • Updated the Lake Michigan Circle Tour page and US-10 listing to reflect the removal/decommissioning of the LMCT Loop route through downtown Scottville.
April 17, 2005		Fixed a few inconsistencies in the US-31 history listing. (Thanks Robert!)
